Why Do Leaves Change Color In The Fall?

Hello 5th Grade!! Great discussion today about this topic! Here is a video for your viewing pleasure...

Based on what you have learned about plants, chlorophyll, and photosynthesis, please summarize your understanding of why leaves do change color in the fall.

  1. Quinn i learned that leaves turn red because of the lose of chloriphil

  2. Ashley Wow!! I knew that since the sun wouldn't be out much longer, plants couldn't use photosynthesis as much. But I didn't know that plants were already red from the start!! For Monday and Wednesday WOW!!! (Monday) I the results in the dark and light bags were shocking!!! The dark plants actually grew!! They weren't in good shape, but they grew!!!! (Wednesday) In the dark bag that got switched up into the light, amazingly turned green in a couple days!! In the light bag that got switched to the dark was already turning light green/yellow!! I was shocked!!!

That is awesome that not all leaves are green. Carotenoids make bannanas yellow!! Cool, now I know why they're yellow!

Interesting! I learned that leaves turn golden during autumn because there is not enough sun to make chlorophyll. The leaves let their remaining chlorophyll break down and so the leaves no longer are green and reveal the reds, oranges, and yellows. I also learned that the leaves were always the red, orange, yellow, and golden that they are in the fall. During the summer, leaves soak up chlorophyll which gives them the green tint. So basically, summer green leaves are fall leaves in disguise;) besides evergreen trees, of course. By the way Ms. Yates, when is Science Night again? Sorry I forgot.

  5. Leaves change color around fall Because around fall it starts getting colder and darker so the leaves just start to die and eat all the nutrionts and then after that they change color and fall.

  6. Ms Yates, I forgot my science journal!!! So I will write it here. Leaves change colors because when the weather gets colder, the plant lets the chlorophyll break down.

  7. Leaves change color based on their PH level and how much sunlight, nutrients, water, and co2 ( tcarbon dioxide) they get.

I learned that in the fall there is less sunlight, so the chlorophyll is not replenished, so that is how the leaves leave behind the colors of red, orange, and yellow.
    Scientist out...

  9. Avinash Says............... It depends o the ph level and the pigmentation.

  10. Leaves change color because there is less sunlight and there is no more use of chlorophyll. So then the leaves change from green when they used to have chlorophyll to yellow color. When the leaves turn yellow it means the leaves have no more chlorophyll on the plants. That is my summary of this video that you let us watch.

  11. Leaves change color in the fall because the fall does not have as much sun. Therefore leaves can not produce chlorophyll, which turns the leaves green. Because the leaves do not have any chlorophyll they turn red, orange, yellow and brown.

  12. Alyssa,
Leaves change color in Autumn because the fall does not have as much sun as in the summer. so, leaves cant make chlorophyll, which turns the leaves green. Because the leaves do not have any chlorophyll they Suddenly turn into Fall colors.
