Nature Walk

How did having a dichotomous key help you to identify the trees on our walk? What made it difficult to identify the trees?

  1. Having a dichotomous key helped us on the walk because we could look at what the leaves looked like. There was also texture description. Not all of the trees were on the dichotomous key so it was hard to identify all of them.

  2. The dichotomous key helped me because identify the leave and the tree's characteristics. The most difficult part of the dichotomous key is to identify some leaves because some of the leaves weren't on the dichotomous key.

Having a dichotomous key helped me identify the trees on the walk because the questions were specific and made it less complicated than just googling it or searching it on the internet. The one thing that made it difficult to identify the trees was trying to find the shape or texture of the leaves correctly. In other words, it was hard to find to right description of the leaves to figure out what type of tree it was.
Thank you for taking us on this awesome little walking field trip!

  4. The dichotomous key helped you identified the charicteristics of the trees which, in return, allowed you to figure out the type of tree it was. The difficulty is that not all trees can be listed on a dichotomous key otherwise it would be extremely long and specific. For example, there could be only 2 trees that have red leaves in a small dichotomous key but there could be 60 trees with red leaves in a bigger dichotomous key which means you have to continue to be specific until you can clearly identify each tree.

It allowed us to look at pictures and read descriptions. this allowed us to use these to identify our leaves. if you needed to know what every leaf and tree looked like it would be extremely hard . What made it hard was the fact that some of the trees were not even in the paper and since they were illustrations they were harder to see.

  6. Identifying the trees was easy because of the key. We were able to look at the leaves and pictures on the key to figure out each of the four trees. One thing that made it difficult was the key. The drawings were animated, but we were still able to identify all of them.

  7. The key confusing yet simple for me. I helped by giving us brief drawing of the leaf. It was very hrd, when it came to deciding witch leaf/tree it was.

  8. The key was helpful to identify the leaf or tree. It was also difficult to use because you didn't know which leaf or tree it was. But this was very fun to go on the walk and I had a lot of fun walking there. We should do it every week or so.

  9. You could see the key to match the tree. It made it easier because there were many trees and you could see the specific one. There were many leaves that were the same just smaller and a lot larger so it make it harder to know.

  10. Some of the leaves look the same so that is something that was difficult. the key helped because first we identified the leaves, then the branches, then further more and at the end, we were able to figure out what tree it was. (we also pet a cat).

  11. The dichotomous key allowed us to name plants based on what we already knew just by looking at the plant. The overgrown bushes made it hard because we didn't know if the plants were trees or bushes. The dichotomous key only classifies trees.

The dichotomous key helped me identify leaves because it gave me specific instructions, characteristics, and a picture. The bushes were sometimes overgrown and that made it harder to tell the difference between a tree and a bush.

  13. The dichotomous key helped me figure out what tree the leaves belonged to. It helped classify the trees, and make it easier to tell the difference between one tree to another. It helped me understand why dichotomous keys are so important and why they are used. The age of a tree made it hard to categorize, because if its leaves weren't fully grown then it was harder to find on the key. Also, some trees weren't on the key, which made all of them hard to classify.

  14. I used texture and shape. A lot of the leaves were similar.
