How did the color of the environment (paper) effect the population (macaroni)? What happened after several generations? What do you predict will happen when you use white paper? What do you think would happen to these species if there were no predators? What would need to occur for speciation to occur? How does this activity relate to evolution, natural selection and the fitness of a species?
Hello my wonderful students!!! Listen closely...are you listening??? This is your science teacher Ms. Yates. I know, I know. I just saw you a few hours ago. Remember the awesome reminders, updates, and fantasticness that I promised you?? It is here. Yep!! Right here. Remember to check it out daily. The rewards will be worth your time. Assignments that you forgot about or were absent for? Here!! Notes you may have missed?? Here too!!! Announcements?? Yep!! And, fantastic reminders of all the cool stuff we did today...All here and more!! See you tomorrow. Or Monday, if you are so awesome that you are reading this over the weekend.
I picked out which ever ones I could see the easiest. Certain colors thrived and other colors died out. There will be an equal amount of red, green, and blue left. If there were no predators then they would fight for resources. In order for speciation to occur 2 species would need to mate. This relates to the evolution of a species because only the species that survive can evolve. This relates to natural selection because predators select their prey based on which is the easiest to find and catch, so if a species blends in to its environment it will be harder for a predator to find. This relates to the fitness of a species because the fitness of a species is how well it can survive in an evnironment. If a species can blend in to its environment then its fitness is higher, but if it stands out then the fitness is lower.

ReplyDelete1. The color of the paper was the same with one of the types of mac. so it made it blend in.
2. The population started to grow.
3. You will get more of the mac.
4. The species will over populate.
5. Evolution
6. Evolution- creating a new species
Natural selection- population grew
Fitness- placed in a new environment
The color of the paper effected the macaroni by which ever color is the brightest you will grab easiest. If the paper was green you would see red the fastest and grab that color. After several generations you either had to put more or less macaroni’s on the paper. So if you started with 20 red and you picked out 6 reds. You would have to subtract 20-6=14. Then, you would have to divide 14 by 2 and you would get 7. 7+14=21. So you would need to add 1 more red. When I use the white piece of paper I think that the population will go up. The species would die. They need there food. If there were no predators the species would need to find other food. This activity relates to evolution natural selection and the fitness of a species by you have to pick the macaroni.

It made it so that some colors of macaroni were easier to see than others. Some of the numbers got bigger than others. When I use the white paper I think I will be able to see all the colors better and choose random ones I see first. I think they would over populate and all the colors would be equal in growth. They would have to split up in different areas or the land scape to change and then have to adapt. It has the species adapting and evolving to its land. Natural selection because it’s the first one you see if one animal does not blend into it environment then it is more likely to be eaten then one that does. Also fitness by seeing with one and live better in with environment.

Some of the macaronis were able to blend in with the paper so it makes those macaronis harder to spot. The population began to increase over time. The macaronis will be vuneravle if the enviornment was white paper. The population would still decrease because they would fight over resourses. Two macaronis would have to mate and create a new macaroni. Evolution because over time the population gets bigger. Fitness because a macaroni needed to blend in with its surroundings to survive. Natural selection because if a macaroni didn't have the energy to survive... he will never be seen ever again.

ReplyDeleteThe same color marconi as the paper makes it so they can blend in to an environment better and the population will increase. After several generations many colors kept getting bigger and bigger while
others stayed tiny or decreased. On white paper I think the population size will drop a little because the colors do not blend in as much. If there were no predators the population would sky rocket and things would compete for natural resources. for speciation to occur you need environmental changes and predators. This activity relates to what we have been learning because we change environments take away predators, and this causes evolution, fitness, and natural selection to occur.
The paper difference made it more easier to look for specific colors of macaroni and the darker the macaroni and the paper the harder it was to pick the darker colors. After many generations I saw that the higher up in the generations a species(macaroni) will do better while some just die out. When we use the white paper I think it will be easier to detect different color of the macaroni. If the species have any predators then the species will have an exponential growth and they the population would decrease because of the lack of space. It is related to natural selection because over time a species will adapt to their environment. For example the snails in our book adapted from one snail to four others with a different shell. Over time the species will evolve because overtime one color of macaroni was dominant.

The more contrast between the "food" and the environment, they more it was easier to spot. For example, if I was a cat in the wild and there was a parrot and a squirrel; the parrot would by far be easier to spot, therefor easier to catch. After several generations the populations became bigger and bigger. When we use white paper I think that all colors will equally stand out because it is a blank background and they are all brightish colors. If there were no predators then the species will keep multiplying and multiplying and get way out of hand. I think that for speciation to happen, a change in environment would have to happen or change in the population of their predator/the development of their predator. The activity relates to evolution because with the predators coming to get the prey/macaroni, the prey will soon figure out a different way to live or do something so that they do not keep dying. This activity relates to natural selection because they prey keeps going for macaroni because they like it, and the macaroni keep doing their thing until they realize that if they do not do such and such, they will not die. Lastly, this activity relates to fitness because some macaroni is "using the environment to their advantage", as in blending in and not having to become prey.

I chose the closest macaroni. I don't think that the color of the paper affected the quantity of a specific color being picked excessively. Their could be groups of a certain color in the mix up or or you deliberately picked all of one or two colors. After several generations, the population would grow once the species hit the number of population 25 or around their. It would grow because you most likely won't pick more than 8 or 7 of one color which gives you 25 - 7 = 18 = 9 partners = 27 and you probably wont get that again. So it would grow exponentially. If there were no predators the species will grow exponentially at an extreme rate and soon enough they will be competing for food or eating each other because the lost predator wasn't keeping the population at normal. This relates to evolution because the predator wouldn't constantly feed off of one specific type of living thing, it will attack in successful bursts, allowing the time in between for the species to mate. I don't see the natural selection in this experiment because we get to decide what color to take. Don't know about fitness either

ReplyDeleteIf the color of the macaroni matched the color of the paper, the number of survivors of that color increased because they blended in more. If we use white paper I predict that the number of survivors in each category will be about he same. I think this because every color has an equal chance of blending in. If there were no predators, the generations after would increase, and overpopulate the area, but disease and competition would bring the population down. For speciation to occur two different species would have to mate. This relates to fitness and natural selection, because the color of the offspring that survives will pass on that color to new generations.
The color or the paper changed the chances of the macaroni being pick because some colors blended in with their environment. The population grew and decreased after several generations because of natural selection. I think that all colors or macaroni will have an even chance on the white paper because no colors blend into their environment. The species would thrive if there were no predators. Two different species would have to mate to have speciation to occur. This experiment shows natural selection because the animals have to blend into their environment to survive. Also natural selection takes a long process.

The macaroni that were the same color as the paper were harder to see not getting picked up (eaten) as much as the other colors that were easy to see. the animals that blended in were much greater in population and there were more of them to reproduce. they grew exponentially and eventually the other colors were greatly outnumbered.

I think that the macaroni that was the same color as the paper was the hardest to attack. this is because the ones that were the same color as the paper blended in more. like on red green and blue would stand out the most. eventually the color of the paper would out number the rest and it would be hard to get rid of them all before the test was over.
