After watching the video, what challenges did the designers for "the Impossible Bridge" face. How did they overcome these challenges?

They needed a bridge that could span an extremely long distance without collapsing. It couldn't cost too much and it needed to have as little piles as possible to not restrict boat traffic and it had to be 200 feet high

The challenges for the bridge architects were that the bridge needed to span a great distance and that boats need to be able to cross underneath the bridge. Also, train traffic meant that the bridge needed to be able to move less under the influence of greater weight and vibration. A cable-stayed bridge allowed boats to pass underneath and the cables attach directly to the pillars, meaning a more stable bridge.

the problems were that the bridge needed to stretch very far and needed to be tall enough for the boats to pass underneath it. the way that the constructors solved this problem was by adding suspension to the bridge.

they couldn't do suspension because of trains, and no arches because of boats, so thay did cable stayed, but why didn't they give truss a try?

With arch being too dangerous and suspension being too expensive cable seemed the best option.

Cable bridge was the best option because it is rigid enough for heavy train traffic, and it is cheaper than suspension bridges.

ReplyDeleteThey had to figure out what kind of bridge they should builed. If they made a arch bridge had a week spot so ships could crash into them. The suspension bridge was to expensive. So they made a cable state bridge.
The challenge was finding a bridge to meet all the requirements they had. They went down the list of possible bridges trying to figure out the pros and cons for each one. The arch bridge could easily collapse if a boat hit the site. The beam bridge couldn't span the far distance well. The suspension bridge was expensive and wouldn't hold the weight of a train. Finally the cable stayed bridge seemed the best because it was inexpensive, and could hold the weight for trains. It could also span the long distance and could let ships pass without destruction.

Some problems the costructers had with the arch bridge because the ships had to small of an area to pass. With the suspension bridge it was to costly. In the end they decided to have a cable-stayed bridge.
