Suspensions, Colloids and Solutions

Someone emailed me tonight looking for clarification on the difference between a colloid and a suspension. This video goes into more depth than you are expected to know, but it is very informative.

For the test you should be able to give examples of each. You should also know the main differences between them. Both are composed of larger molecules than a solution.

Colloids
composed of smaller molecules
usually do not separate on standing
can not be separated by filtration
Example: Fog

Suspensions
composed of larger molecules
separate on standing
can be separated by filtration
Example: Blood
